Your role

PR and communications lead

Running public relations and communications, inside and outside the company.

The PR and communications lead manages how the organisation is seen by the media, the public, staff and other stakeholders. In an integrated plan they protect the reputation every other discipline relies on, bring earned and owned voices into the mix, and keep what is said inside and outside the organisation consistent. When something goes wrong, they lead.

What matters when choosing

  • Monitoring and listening across news, social and messaging, in the languages that matter.
  • A crisis plan with roles, approvals and channels agreed before it is needed.
  • Measurement of outcomes and reputation, not counts of clippings.
  • Tools and partners that reach employees as well as the outside world.
  • Spokespeople and experts ready to speak, with clear rules on disclosure.

Questions to ask vendors and agencies

  1. How fast can we know, decide and respond when an issue breaks?
  2. How will we show the effect of communications beyond the volume of coverage?
  3. How do staff hear news before the public does?

Common mistakes

  • Treating PR as a press-release service rather than part of the plan from the start.
  • Telling staff one thing and the public another.
